| I would reiterate DO NOT default on your school loan! I went to college back in 86' and come 94 I was still bs'ing about the school loan. Deferred it a few times and what not...just wanting to enjoy my money all to myself.
Even deferred (I am speaking of Delaware, parts of MD and DC) most banks did not want any part of me or my business. A banker explained that because of me not repaying the loan and other folks doing same school loans are not as plentiful/easy to get. His kids have to suffer. Long story short banks were biased against me and I was turned down. (with good credit)
Once I payed it off banks really showed some love. I felt like an American again! LOL
Keep your school loan in good standing and talk to your credit card companies.
I went and got a debit/credit card so now life is gravy. I pay for everything once and I only spend what I can afford at the time. No interest rates either.
35 yrs old now and debt free except for house payment and utilities. (Gotta send the oldest to college in 4 years! Damn)
Your goal is to get out of the red so remain focused and you will see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Oh and lastly (man I'm long winded lol) don't sell the Z unless you absolutely have to. Just for the sake of transportation. I would however make a decision between the greater burden...your car or your wife's ailing auto. That is if you have to drive to get to work at all. Public transportation could save you a ton over the long run. That's my .02.
Sorry that you are in the situation and good luck to you.
